05' Fall Chapter Trip:

The West Denver Fall Chapter trip was as successful as any we have taken over the years.  This year we stuck a little closer to home and spent three days down at Lake George and fished 11 Mile Canyon.

Bill's Big Brownie! Quite a circus as this beauty (23" and an 11' girth) pulled Bill McLaughlin (left) about 30 yards down the Dream Stream before buddy Gary Sieverin could finally net it.We were joined by a group from the Cherry Creek Trout Unlimited chapter.  Joining us was "Fishing Phenom "Bill McLaughlin, Dry Fly castmaster Gary Sieverin and the ever happy Granpa' Dennis Cook.  Our Chapter consisted of Tom Dubois the Fly Fishin' Fanatic,  along with Martin Mahanti, whose laugh just makes you want to be along with him anywhere he goes, Ron Hill the fish Magnet, Dale Robson fresh from an Alaska Salmon tour, Dan and Linda Sullivan whom together put on a fish catching clinick from 10 am till noon on Tuesday and Jim Arnold and his buddy "Buster the Fishing Dog."

We stayed two nites at the Cabins in Lake George and fit everyone in our living room for Dinner and Breakfast each day and we had a most wonderful weekend of cooking and eatin' and talking and of course there was a little fishing involved.

We arrived Sunday morning and for some reason the river was not crowded much at all.  I think it had to do with the Bronco's - Pats game that day but that made for a great start to the trip as we all had a chance to start joining up and getting our feet wet, as they say and do a little fishing on beautiful Sunday.

As we gathered at the cabins that evening we prepared a Great Pot Luck style dinner for everyone as we sort of pre planned our meals and allowed everyone to be a part of one meal or another throughout the weekend.  Chili and ribs and stuffed cabbage with salad and rolls.  What a feast.  So much so that I think we all ate too much. Or my stuffed cabbage was aged a little too much?

Monday morning, 7:30 breakfast was served and we all gathered again to get ready for full day on the river.

Again our group had the river fairly all to ourselves as all of us together sort of took over the canyon.  Not hogging it as we allowed anyone to work the areas we were in and fish where ever they wished and for that I am thankful for what this group showed to everyone in what Fishing Etiquette really is.   People passing thru were invited to join us but with this group and the fun they were having and laughing going on all day, I could not help but wonder what anyone could have thought about us. Such as "who let out the insane asylum"  This many people together could not possibly be having this much fun.   Fly Fishing is supposed to be "Serious Business"

Monday we had a Catered Lunch on the side of the river with simple sandwiches and beverages all around.  The day could not have been nicer and fishing could not have been better.   Everyone was into fish at one time or another and we spent the whole day fishing and laughing and learning each others techniques and patterns.   If one Pattern didn't work someone was there to hand them another and wish them luck.

Again that evening dinner was at our cabin with  Ron's Cajun Shrimp dinner and More of Dan Ribs and Linda's Green Chili  along with Granpa' Dennis's Homemade Beef Chili. We learned that Fly Folk can cook and all of it was Great.

Tuesday we broke camp and started to go our own ways and venture out to other areas of river along the way home.   Our group stayed in the Canyon and Cherry Creek's group headed for new waters.  We had sporadic hatches going off all day as we took advantage of what we had and again, the fishing was fantastic and the day was wonderful.

I can't thank everyone enough for helping, in each of their own ways to have another Fun Filled Chapter Trip and I think we found a few new friends outside our chapter to help increase the camaraderie between the Colorado Trout Unlimited chapters which, in the end can only help bring the state of Colorado T.U. closer together and  show everyone that what we do is Conservation in our waters and camaraderie on the water as we work together as a team. But, then of course to have the time of our lives Fly Fishing together.

See you on the river and remember  " Tips Up"
