THE SEASONS ON THE COLORADO RIVER
The February program for Cherry Creek Anglers' monthly meeting will introduce you to both seasonal changes on the Colorado River and the different terrain and water as it flows from its headwaters in Rocky Mountain National Park to New Castle.
Bob Dye, Blue Quill Angler Guide, will cover the 'Seasons on the Colorado' from early spring fishing to the coolness of winter. His presentation will cover the types of flies to use and the best methods to fish the different areas of the river.
As usual, the meeting on Thursday, February 9, will begin at 7 p.m. at Gander Mountain sports, 14000 E. Jewell Ave., Aurora. All are welcome to come early and look over raffle items and catch up on who's been fishing where. The CCA chapter meeting is open to everyone.
Bob started his guiding career on the North Platte in Wyoming. He is presently a guide for Blue Quill Angler in Evergreen. He is out guiding approximately 170 day each year. The majority of this time is on the Colorado River.
Bob is also an excellent fly tier, as shown in the photo he has been assisting Cherry Creek Anglers at the Bass Pro Spring Fishing Classic the last couple of years.

PROTECTING THE ENVIRONMENT HAS A STRONG ADVOCATE
At the January CCA meeting guide Bill Dvorak gave the audience a brain-healthy serving of information on efforts to preserve Colorado's environment for future fishers and hunters while saving taxpayer's money, then offered a luscious dessert of pictures on the Gunnison Gorge.
Dvorak is owner of Dvorak Raft, Kayak and Fishing Expeditions in Northrop and has been working with the National Wildlife Federation on getting the BLM and oil and gas industries to develop energy sources responsibly. He is also an activist at the legislature and has been tracking the merger of the Division of Wildlife and the Parks Division. While this merger is touted as a means of making government more efficient, it was noted that anglers and hunters are concerned it may mean using license fees to help subsidize parks. There is an overlap of functions that the merger may enhance.
But also of interest to the crowd were his pictures of the Gunnison Gorge at the Black Canyon of the Gunnison. Bill runs fishing trips through the gorge, one of Colorado's rivers that can benefit from proper oversight. While he is an expert on white water rafting, he made clear this was a safe and fish-productive stretch of water (most of the time!).

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED FOR THE BASS PRO FISHING CLASSIC
Each year CCA participates in the Bass Pro Fishing Classic at their store in the Northfield Mall just north of I-70 in Denver. This year, the event will be held on February 25 & 26 and March 3 & 4. Volunteers will get a 15% discount on items in the store on the day that they volunteer - there may be some restrictions in case you want a big boat or something but check with Ralph.
We have a few tables inside the store and can use fly tiers, leader makers, fly rod makers or any of the other arts associated with fly fishing to show and talk to people. We also need volunteers to explain who we are and what we do, talk about project HEART, and encourage people to become TU and CCA members. It is a fun event and a chance to share your interest in fishing and the mission of Trout Unlimited.
The Saturday starts at 9 am and ends at 5 pm, Sunday will start an hour later at 10 am, with the same end time. We have two shifts per day, 9-1, 1-5 on Saturday, and 10-1:30, 1:30-5 on Sunday. If you can help, please let Ralph Rhoades at

COLORADO TROUT UNLIMITED (CTU) TO HOLD THEIR ANNUAL RIVER STEWARDSHIP GALA IN MARCH
Help support the work of CTU by attending their largest fund-raising event of the year at the Arvada Center on the evening of March 16. As with past Gala's this will be a great social event that will benefit both you and CTU. There will be a silent auction, raffles, and a live auction in addition to a full sit-down dinner and a reception featuring complimentary wine and beer. The proceeds from the Gala will benefit statewide programs for river protection that help us all: legislative advocacy, on-the-ground projects, chapter mini-grants, and more.
The event will be held at the Arvada Center located at 68th and Wadsworth. It is fun and worth the drive. CCA has purchased a table for ten and will be selling these places at the table for the price of $50 each to CCA Chapter members (and their spouses or significant others). It is first come (with a payment), first served for those ten tickets. Contact Bob Schmidt (

or at the next meeting) with your money. After the initial ten places are gone, the ticket cost will be $100 each.

A CONSERVATION MOMENT: COLORADO RIVER WATCH
River Watch is a statewide volunteer water quality-monitoring program operated by the non-profit Colorado Watershed Assembly in cooperation with the Colorado Parks and Wildlife (CPW). It works with volunteers to monitor water quality and other indicators of watershed health. These data provide another source of information of health of the rivers in Colorado.
The volunteers come from a wide range of organizations throughout the state. These include many students, conservation organizations, and some chapters of Colorado Trout Unlimited. CCA participates with the Cutthroat Chapter of TU on monitoring the South Platte just upstream of Decker's. The group samples the water once a month for water quality parameters. These include temperature, pH, hardness, dissolved oxygen, alkalinity, and heavy metals. Twice a year the group collects samples to be analyzed for nutrients. Once a year (see photo) they collect macro-invertebrate samples at two places on the South Platte - one upstream of Decker's and the other a mile or so downstream. The metals, nutrient and macro-invertebrate samples are done by CPW or outside labs while the rest are performed by the group in the basement lab of Bill Honeyfield, the team leader from Cutthroat.
River Watch provides training for the team leader on sampling and analysis. Once a year, the group takes a certification exam on their analytical skills at the CPW headquarters in Denver. The last one was in January and they passed with flying colors.
